"As a former officer aboard a Los Angeles Class Nuclear Powered Fast Attack Submarine, the most important watch to stand was the Officer of the Deck, with the responsibility of 140 lives and $1 Billion dollars of equipment at stake. You had to study and train very hard to become ‘competent to stand the watch.’ ‘Competent to stand the watch’ meant you knew very well how to do your job but you never ‘knew it all.’ You constantly studied and trained, asked questions, and got help whenever you needed it. You also depended on the other members of your watch team and on their expertise to safely navigate the waters about you.”
